A New Head of Conservation for SLAM

Lucian H. (Hugh) Shockey Jr. has been appointed as the new Head of Conservation at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Hugh has worked in conservation for the past twenty years, the last ten as an objects conservator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Lunder Conservation Center. Hugh holds a Master of Science degree in Art Conservation from the University of Delaware. His conservation experience is broad and beyond traditional sculpture, has included large scale outdoor installations, ethnographic and archaeological objects, decorative arts, furniture, contemporary plastics, and time-based media art.Hugh served as President of the Washington Conservation Guild, is a Professional Associate in the American Institute for Conservation, and has published on innovative treatment techniques that have been cited internationally. At SAAM, Hugh played a key role in large scale institutional projects such as the creation of the Museum’s environmental policy and was a member of the initial response team for the Smithsonian’s Haiti Cultural Recovery Project which launched recovery efforts after the devastating earthquake of 2010.Hugh will take up his position at SLAM in early August.
