Multispectral Imaging (MSI) for Conservators

Multispectral imaging (MSI) is a non-invasive, investigative technique that uses a modified camera to examine decorative surfaces. It can provide information on the condition and composition of a surface: locating overpaint, visualizing underdrawings, and characterizing pigments. MSI can also be used as a starting point to judge the need for further technical analysis.In this introductory hands-on workshop, participants will learn:

  • How different imaging techniques work and what information they provide

  • What equipment is needed for MSI and how to create an MSI kit for in-lab or field use

  • How to use different infrared imaging tools

  • How to capture UV fluorescence images, UV reflected images, infrared reflected images, and visible-induced infrared luminescence images

  • How to process images and generate false color images

  • How to interpret reflectance and luminescence properties captured in images

Instructors

Aaron Steele (imaging guru) is the conservation imaging specialist and an associate photographer at the Detroit Institute of Arts. He has a decade of experience in imaging, photography, and digital asset management at a variety of institutions including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Northeast Document Conservation Center, and the Lilly Rare Books Library at Indiana University.

Aaron Burgess (coffee-boy/gopher) is a Mellon fellow in objects conservation at the Detroit Institute of Arts. He specializes in modern and contemporary artworks and used MSI extensively in his graduate studies at Buffalo State.

Carrie Roberts (workshop organizer) is a conservator at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For the past three years, her research has successfully utilized MSI in both museum and archaeological field settings.

Registration

This workshop is limited to the first 8 participants to enroll. There is no fee, but pre-registration / confirmation is required.
