EMERGING CONSERVATION PROFESSIONALS NETWORK PORTFOLIO DAY

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
A Portfolio Day allows emerging conservators to share and learn from each other’s portfolios, whether they be for graduate school, internship, fellowship, or early career applications. This is a FREE in-person event hosted by ECPN at the 2021 MRCG meeting Friday, November 12, 2021 from 2:00-4:00pm EST. Early career conservators are encouraged, but not expected, to bring questions and their own portfolios. Attendance at the conference is encouraged but not mandatory for the Portfolio Day and emerging conservators interested in attending the conference can apply to the MRCG Scholarship Program for financial assistance.

PORTABLE XRF FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE: A WORKSHOP WITH BRUKER NANO ANALYTIC

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
The aim of this workshop is to familiarize attendees with the capabilities of Bruker’s range of handheld and portable XRF instruments that are currently used for elemental analysis in the cultural heritage environment. With a specific focus on the TRACER 5 handheld XRF and ELIO portable mapping XRF instruments, the workshop will be a blend of presentations that cover the fundamentals of the XRF technique and application of handheld/portable instruments, with live instrument demonstrations by Bruker application specialists that will involve measurements of objects and materials held within collections at the Indiana State Museum. A key element of the workshop will involve an emphasis on appropriate handling of the instruments to collect the best data safely, for both user and object, and robust evaluation of data collected by both instruments.

INSTUCTOR: Nigel Kelly
Nigel Kelly is a Senior Market Applications Scientist for Bruker Nano Analytics working directly to provide applications support to customers in Art & Conservation. Now based in Denver, CO, Nigel originally started out life in the Antipodes, receiving his PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia. He has more than 20 years of experience in microanalysis, and currently has the fortune of being able to support cultural heritage studies that use and integrate a range of different X-ray instruments including handheld-XRF, micro- and macro-XRF , and Bruker’s SEM-based solutions.
